How To Make Money Promoting Amazon Products

Feb 23, 2017, Affiliate Marketing, Make Money

Have you heard of people making money from Amazon? You can certainly sell your own products (or other’s products & be the middle man) on Amazon, but there’s an even simpler way to make money: by just referring people to products on Amazon with an affiliate link that pays you a commission any time they buy. I’ll cover the details in the post below…

Amazon Affiliates Make Money Promoting Amazon ProductsWhen you are just beginning as a blogger, you’re eager to make money in just about any way you can, and a great place to start is by becoming an Amazon Associate. This allows you to promote anything that Amazon sells (which is EVERYTHING!) and make a commission of 4%-10% every time something is bought by somebody you referred.

Being an Associate of Amazon allows you to place hyperlinks throughout your blog articles that direct viewers to products on Amazon that are relevant to what you’re discussing in your articles.  The great thing about these links is that they stay on your website forever and will continue to send you money for years to come.

I’ve been making affiliate commissions from my websites for at least 5 years now, and in this blog post, I’m going to do my best to help you understand what it takes to begin making money promoting Amazon’s products.

I’ll break it down into two main categories:

1) how to get started & how it all works, and

2) how to actually make money with it.

Setting Up Your Account

Before signing up, you need to take a look at your analytic reports to find out where the majority of your website traffic is coming from. If most of them are from a certain country, such as the UK or Australia, you would want to use an Associate’s account that matches that country. But overall, most traffic is from the U.S., and this is where most people would want to set up their account.

You can click here to set up your Amazon Associates account. It’s free to join, and application reviews/approvals can take 24-48 hours.

Creating Links

Once you have your account set up, your next step is to learn how to create links to the products you want to help promote. It’s fairly self-explanatory, but I’ll go through it with you to be sure.

Whenever you are logged in to Amazon’s site with your new account, a dark grey toolbar, called the SiteStripe, will float at the top of your browser window as you browse around the website.

Amazon Associate Toolbar

This toolbar allows you to check your Earnings Stats, and also lets you create your custom affiliate link to whatever page or product your are currently viewing.

When you click on the “Link to this page” button, a window will pop up with options to choose from to modify your link. It gives you the ability to make image links, widgets for pages, and all kinds of variations, but honestly, all I ever use is the standard affiliate TEXT LINK. I also shorten the titles since the full title is usually too long for what I want to use it for.

Then I copy and paste product images into my articles and add the affiliate link to those images, also adding the hyperlink to certain keywords throughout the text. As you’ll see from the image below, my ID is embedded into this code so that whenever anyone clicks on the link, Amazon will know who sent them.

Your Commission or “Advertising Fee”

*February 23, 2017 Update: while Amazon Associates used to pay a variable rate, that increased with the volume of sales per month in many categories, Amazon has now adjusted their fee structure to a flat commission rate by category.

As you can see in the image above, if you sell something in the Lawn & Garden category, for instance, you’ll earn an 8% commission on that product. Likewise, selling a Musical Instrument would net you 6%.

Regardless of the niche you’re a part of, if you sell a large quantity of products through Amazon’s associate program, you can make A LOT of money.

A very nice side benefit of directing your visitors to Amazon is that they are VERY GOOD at getting people to stay on their site and browse around for other things they would like to buy, completely unrelated to what you sent them there for.

One of the best parts of their program, is that Amazon will pay you commission on anything your referrals buy, within 24 hours of you sending them to Amazon, not just what you sent them there for!

I had somebody click a link on one of my websites that was promoting a Robert Kiyosaki “Rich Dad Poor Dad” book (I could tell this from the tracking links), and ended up buying a fairly expensive metal detector and sand scoop! Random, but I got paid for that so I was happy!

How You Get Paid

With Amazon, you have three options for form of payment:

  • Bank transfer
  • Mailed check
  • Store credit

$50 Amazon Gift CardIf you do a lot of shopping on Amazon, the store credit option could come in quite handy. Another benefit of keeping the money within Amazon as a store credit is that you can offer up a portion of it as a gift card for a prize offering. For instance, you can encourage people to Like your Facebook page, and once a milestone of fans is reached, say 1000, you can pick someone at random and give them the gift card. People really go for promotions like this; it’s hard to turn down free money, and for you it’s good because it isn’t coming straight out of your pocket.

…But, if you have a goal of earning $5,000, $10,000, or even $80,000 per month, you’ll probably be wanting that money transferred directly into your bank account; which Amazon does once per month.

Now, How To Actually Make Money With It…

For perspective, let me go back to my experience when I first got started as an Amazon Associate…

When I first opened my account, I had a list on my blog of my top recommended books to read, and began by linking all of them to the book’s buy page on Amazon.

I didn’t really expect much from it at the outset though, so I just left it alone.

But one day I an email from Amazon informing me that I needed to update my payment options as I was owed over $100, which definitely surprised me!

I logged in to check it out and spent some time browsing through the stats. I was shocked to see that in one day I sold 10 copies of Robert Kiyosaki’s The Business of the 21st Century”.

You don’t earn money on returned products, or on products you bought yourself through your own affiliate link. The reporting has a bit of lag time, as it takes a day or two for the sales to show up on your earnings report.

You may be thinking you can’t really earn that much money from making 4%-8% on $10 or $20 books. But it can start to add up if you sell some higher-priced items through your links.

…In a bit, I’ll explain the game plan and action steps I recommend you take and focus on, but part of that will include focusing on promoting higher priced products that generate larger commissions for you per sale.

For instance, let’s say a reader buys a digital camera or computer or television for around $2,000…that would give you a $95 commission or so! Much more motivating in the beginning to see that number than a $.20 commission from a book or something.

But they work together, if you can sell a high volume of lower priced products, that will kick you up higher in the commission Fee Chart, earning a higher percentage per sale, so when you sell those higher priced products of $500, $1,000, or more, you’ll earn more on each of those sales as a result.

Clever, I know!

Now, let’s chat about the best way to get your Amazon Associates Referral Links in front of as many people as possible…

Write Review Articles

Write List & Review Articles

If you really want to entice people to buy through your website, then you need to make it easy for them to do just that.

I’m saying do things like write lists of products that you recommend for various reasons, complete with a description, review and picture. Make them thorough and authentic, using knowledge and experience you have, or from research of other customer reviews on the Internet, so the searcher finding your article will have all their questions answered, and be ready to click on your link to buy on Amazon.

Make the articles appealing so people will want to read it, and search engine optimize it, and in a matter of time you’ll be making commissions on the sale of a countless variety of items.

These lists can take a little while to put together, but they’re absolutely the best place to start.

All you need to do is include a personal touch and then copy and paste some relevant information from Amazon. This isn’t plagiarism because this text has been written by the seller or manufacturer to help promote the sale of their products and that’s exactly what you’re doing. The same thing goes for the photos, just make sure you’ve got them looking good and in keeping with your website and you’ll be good to go. I take a lot of time making sure the photos are crisp and attractive, because they can really help to sell the product to the reader.

What Products Should I Write About And Promote?

1) Only cover products that are relevant to the niche you’re working in. Readers finding your site about dogs, for instance, aren’t there for a review on the best DSLR cameras, and will be very unlikely to read the content, let alone click on links to go buy on Amazon.

Think about your target audience – those most likely to visit your site – determine what they’re interested in, their burning desires, and major problems they have.

Then, focus on writing about the products that will solve those issues, fulfill those desires, and give them what they want…Do that, and you’re more likely to get them to click through and purchase what you recommend.

2) Begin with higher-priced products ($500 or greater). Quite simply, seeing a commission in your Earnings Report of $30 for selling a $500 product, or $60 for a $1,000 product, is so much more rewarding and motivating as you’re getting started, than some 50 cent commission is.

And, it takes a LOT fewer of those $30 or $60 commissions to help you reach your initial monthly income goal than it would earning 50 cent commissions from some $10 gadget.

As I mentioned earlier, the larger quantity of items you can sell per month, the higher commission rate you’ll earn…so yes, you can definitely promote any priced product you want, and you WILL want to promote lower priced products that sell in higher volumes, to help boost you up the Commissions Tiers. But I personally believe that can wait for the future, after you’re earning larger commissions from reviews of higher priced products.

3) Write about things you are knowledgeable and passionate about. This isn’t a MUST, but it certainly helps you create more content when you know quite a bit about the topic and products in that niche. And, the more content you can create in the beginning, the better traction you’ll get in building your site and traffic flow to it.

Pro Tip: Don’t Try To “Sell” A Product

Many amateur writers make the mistake of coming across like a pushy salesperson.

Your objective is simply to help people who already want some kind of product – but just have a few questions – to decide which one is the best to purchase. These are the easier readers to convert into referral link clicks & sales…and selling them on a product actually pushes them away.

With that in mind, provide price and rating comparisons, highlight key feature differences, and share insight from customer reviews.

If you have personal experience with the product, share negatives about it along with the positives…Perhaps the newest model isn’t as good as the old one? Or, in your opinion, the upgraded model isn’t worth the extra cost.

Whatever the case, sharing these insights and opinions appears more authentic, less “salesy”, and more believable.

No Better Time To Start Than Now…

Picture of an alarm clock going offIt’s important to get started on Amazon early because the sooner you build a following and start to rank higher for your referring posts, the easier it will be to move up to higher commission percentage rates each month. It’s the sort of thing that sits and does a lot of the work for you so that you can sit back and watch the money come in.

Even though it may seem like a lot of effort to make a big post that no one is really reading when you start out, it will prove to be worth it as it makes you money in the years to come.

BONUS: An Idea For The Holidays

Amazon Christmas Gifts

It’s no secret, the busiest time of year for Amazon is around the winter holidays. Sellers often earn as much in Q4 as they do in Q1-3 combined. From Black Friday all the way up through the day before Christmas, the amount of online shopping people do is just crazy.

In the past, I’ve published list articles around early to mid November, called something along the lines of ‘Top 10 XXXX To Buy This Christmas’.

I would throw in loads of photos, list key features, share info and feedback from a few customer reviews and, of course, include links for all the items on the list.

And this idea can be applied to any niche; let me show you just how easy it is to come up with your own lists:

  • Top 10 Christmas Gifts For Gamers
  • Top 10 Things To Buy Fitness Fanatics For Christmas
  • Top 10 Gifts That Will Make Your Husband’s Christmas Perfect
  • Top 10 Music Albums To Grab This Christmas
  • Top 10 Movies From 2010 To Buy For Christmas
  • Top 10 Hottest Gadgets To Get This Christmas

Create & Build An Authority Site

An authority site is just what the name implies: a website that is regarded as an authority in its niche because it has so much content devoted to it.

You could choose to spend your time building 5 or 10 different niche websites (each devoted to its own specific topic), or you could spend an equal amount of time focusing on one site that covers a little bit broader niche/topic.

We live in an age where information is abundant, but trust is rare and difficult to find.

…It may seem like more work in the beginning, but if you create a website that is devoted to one core topic, and pack it full of helpful information and content, you’ll begin to stand out as an authority in that space…which goes a long way in garnering trust from your visitors and readers.

Resources & Further Reading

I’m not the only one who has profited from the Amazon Associates program, and there are countless marketers who have done FAR better than I.

Fortunately, some of those experts have shared their advice, experiences, and lessons learned publicly. I’ve learned much of what I know from them, and you deserve to as well.

Here are a few great resources I recommend if you want to dive deeper into the world of niche sites, authority sites, affiliate marketing with Amazon, etc.

In Conclusion

As I’m sure you can see by now, Amazon Associates program offers you a HUGE opportunity to profit from referring shoppers to items they will be happy purchasing.

If you have an existing website, I would encourage you to analyze where your traffic is coming from, what kind of products your target audience would buy, and create an Amazon Associate account today.

If your site isn’t popular or highly trafficked yet, just be patient.

Focus each day on two main tasks:

1) Creating more content, and

2) Getting more traffic through link building, outreach to influential sites in your niche, guest blog posting, and perhaps paid traffic (ads) if you have the budget for it

…If you do those two things, it’s only a matter of time before your website, posts, and Amazon Associate referral links begin paying you back for your time invested.
